Training teachers to implement a competency-based curriculum

By: Joshua Muskin

Geneva Global Managing Director Joshua Muskin joined recently with Muluken Nigatu, CEO of Teachers and School Leaders Development at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education, to publish a blog about “Training Teachers to Implement the Competency-Based Curriculum” on the website of UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity-Building in Africa.  In this piece, Drs. Muskin and Nigatu identify some of the major reasons that teachers struggle to translate the country’s new curriculum into legitimate competency-based learning.  Referring to efforts taken with the ministry and, more particularly, with the Oromia Regional Education Bureau, they outline a series of actions that appear to be “moving the needle” on how colleges of teacher education train teachers to design and deliver lessons that are truly competency-based.
