Aligning initiatives with strategic planning

December 12, 2023

Determining where and how to best invest in development or philanthropic funding can be difficult. What is already being done by other actors? What are a country’s greatest needs? How do these needs align with your giving priority?

Understanding where initiatives are already making a difference and what those programs might have overlooked are key to targeting complementary and effective impact. So, when a bilateral donor (a government agency giving aid to another country) approached us to help them identify key needs across five countries and develop a multi-country giving strategy across three sectors, we were eager to assist.

Guided by In-Depth Analysis

The first step was to sit down with the donor to listen to its needs and desired impact, as well as clarify its priorities and existing commitments. With a clear understanding of its development agenda, we then worked closely with local nongovernmental organizations, governments, and communities to identify underlying problems in the five countries and any gaps in aid.

We conducted research in each geography, including a scoping study and on-the-ground data collection with key stakeholders, to ensure we understood the local context. Based on this investigation of local needs and perspective on our client’s priorities, we produced five reports, one for each country. These reports contained in-depth analysis, mapping of existing partners and programs across the health, education, and economic development sectors, and recommendations on where to continue funding and where to invest new capital.

The client used these reports to inform international aid to the identified five countries, supporting programs across health, education, and economic development.
