Geneva Global Ethiopia’s Speed School program helps children, like 14-year-old Medhanit, receive a primary education in just ten months – an education they were often forced to leave behind due to social and economic constraints. Through an engaging, activity-based curriculum, children learn essential skills in reading, writing, and math, allowing them to transition into traditional primary schools at the fourth-grade level, allowing them to be closer in age to their peers. Teachers note that the students are eager and quick to learn, with many advancing to higher grades in regular schools. Despite the availability of free primary and secondary education, financial barriers still hinder access for many families. Medhanit’s mother expresses her desire for her daughter to succeed academically, referencing her own academic struggles with literacy, wishing her daughter a better life than she had. To combat dropout rates due to material costs, Geneva Global helps mothers establish savings programs, empowering them to support their children’s education beyond Speed School.
