Providing Diverse Pathways to Education For Children with Disabilities with Speed School

Globally, 240 million children with disabilities face significant barriers to education, particularly in Ethiopia due to armed conflict, poverty, and cultural taboos. ECW’s multi-year resilience program, in partnership with UNICEF Ethiopia and other organizations, helps provide quality education to marginalized children. Initiatives like the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) and home-based instruction permit children, especially disabled children, to catch up on essential skills and integrate into local schools. Shared anecdotes highlight the transformative impact of support—like a mother training to be a home-based instructor, a boy receiving hearing aids and a girl receiving glasses, which improved their learning. Disability inclusion remains a challenge, with disabled children being disproportionately affected by lack of access to education and resources.
