Success Story: The Government Adoption of Speed School in Sidama Region

Tula Primary School in Sidama, Ethiopia may look modest, but it houses a vibrant, transformative classroom through the government-run Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)—an adoption of Geneva Global’s Speed School model. This classroom is one of 230 ALP classes now operating across the Sidama region, thanks to the leadership of the Sidama Regional Education Bureau (REB), which began funding and expanding the initiative in 2021.

At the heart of Tula’s success is Mr. Rijal Aman, a passionate teacher who uses creative, student-centered methods to engage 25 learners—many of whom were previously out of school. His classroom is alive with handmade materials, recycled learning tools, and innovative activity corners like a lending library, mini store, and handicrafts center. Supporting him is principal Jamal Bariso, a hands-on leader who actively mentors his staff and champions a culture of joyful learning.

This impact is made possible by the vision of leaders like Tefesse Gebremeriem, Deputy Head of the Sidama REB. A former Speed School trainee himself, he has led the REB in scaling the program from 90 to 230 classes in just two years, re-enrolling over 6,380 out-of-school children into formal education.

The success of Tula’s ALP class is a testament to the power of committed teachers, inspired leadership, and strategic partnerships—all working together to bring quality education to the children who need it most.
