It is a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the past and a celebration of the resilience and achievements of black individuals throughout history. Black History Month is not just about honoring the past, but also recognizing the importance of learning from and celebrating people with diverse backgrounds. By understanding the experiences and perspectives of others, we gain a broader and more nuanced view of the world. This is crucial to further breaking down stereotypes, fostering empathy, and building a more inclusive society where everyone is valued. To begin our Black History Month celebrations, our team had the privilege of learning from A’Lelia Bundles. She is an accomplished journalist, news producer, and author. She spoke with our team about the importance of philanthropy and the incredible life of her great-great-grandmother, Madam C.J. Walker.
Madam C.J. Walker was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, political activist, and the first female self-made millionaire in America. Born to enslaved parents and with little education, she got herself out of poverty and the South and created a product for African American hair, inspired by healing her hair loss. A’Lelia’s connection to Madam C.J. Walker is not merely a matter of familial lineage; it is a testament to her commitment to preserving and celebrating a legacy of empowerment, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. A’Lelia has meticulously chronicled the life and achievements of her great-great-grandmother, ensuring that her story resonates across generations. Through her work, she illuminates not only the remarkable success of Madam C.J. Walker but also the struggles and triumphs of African American women in the early 20th century.
